The Australian Writers’ Guild is the apex industry body representing writers for stage, screen and radio and has protected and promoted their creative and professional interests for more than 50 years. By supporting Australian writers we strengthen the industry as a complete and are proud of our role in assisting many major productions to be made in Australia. The maximum smooth of membership in the Australian Writers’ Guild is Life Membership. It was a time of vast uncertainty for drama writers. These were also an urgent way of bringing writers together. Registration was seen as vitally important because it provided recognition and promote from other Trade Unions within the industry, notably Actors’ Equity and the Musicians’ Union. Ironically, it was a dispute with the only commercial television station producing drama at that time. In fact, only around 7 of entire television drama was Australian and the only locally produced drama was Crawford Productions’ Homicide. Although much lower than the 25 quota suggested by the Guild, it was quiet double the amount of local drama that was being produced. As a consequence, a decision was made to grip an annual Federal Conference of all members. There were campaigns to lobby against media ownership monopolies and declining television production standards, as healthy as for an amplify in local content quotas to 75 of all programs, with a greater delineation of program categories. The succeeding year, the Guild raised member fees and began employing an Executive Officer. It also started forming subcommittees to deal with different industrial issues and began occupied on a proposal to register the ang as a stuffed industrial union. Work began on amending the Industry Wide Agreement to include clauses regarding residuals, largely a response to a mysterious agreement that was being formed between FACTS and the Film Producers’ organization to boycott producers who agreed to pay residuals to writers. There was prevalent industry unemployment and although film production was up, television production was at an all time low, despite the Government amending local content quotas to 75. Also, writers were to be limited to Guild members only. New membership categories were established for stuffed members (professional writers for radio, TV, theater and film), script editors, students and honorary membership for non writer Guild supporters. Guidelines and least rates were established for writers across the spectrum of feature film, documentary, television, radio and theater and it has negotiated agreements with the Screen Producers’ Association of Australia (SPCA) and all major television production companies and broadcasters for television series and serials rates and residuals. He has spent maximum of his professional life writing television drama. The committee offers development and networking opportunities at various events throughout the year. Our end meeting of the year is a big Christmas party stuffed of fun, drinks, trivia contests and talk about all things writerly. Okay perhaps we’ll retain the details of the succeeding to ourselves, behind all, what happens at the NSC stays at the NSC, but for those of you joining us for the first time, your in for a treat.
