A wheelwright by trade, James was called on by local undertakers to make coffins and often assisted with their duties. As a Methodist lay preacher James observed the importance of a funeral service to families future to terms with the loss of a loved one and he was requested by the elders of his community to receive on the role of a funeral director. Having experienced this pastoral role, and having practical experience in building coffins as healthy as being an Attendant at funeral services, the move to becoming a funeral director was both instinctive and easy. James Purslowe passed away in 1925 and was succeeded by his three sons Herbert, Arthur and Ernest. Added to this was a new coffin manufacturing business which operated out of May lands.
